Vacation: It’s Over

I’m trying my best to stay awake. It’s only 1:30 in the afternoon and my eyes are drooping, my body confused with the time change. I hate this feeling. We arrived home yesterday around 4:30pm after a 10 hour plane ride from Orlando to Manchester followed by a 5 hour drive back to Scotland. It doesn’t usually take 5 hours, but by this point we had been awake for a full day and had to make frequent stops for caffeine and power naps. Why is sleeping on a plane so hard? I shouldn’t feel tired today. I managed to sleep from 9 o’clock UK time...

Story Magic

An hour ago, I decided to take a walk down to my favourite spot on Troon beach where surf surges hungrily against the dark craggy shore. It’s beautiful, the sun is shining and the sea is full of a glittering jewels, ‘sparkle time’. I sit on a tartan rug, the roar of the waves fill my ears and I sit, pen in hand. You see, I’m meant to be working on the first draft of the Pretty Dark Nothing sequel, but I’m struggling to hear Quinn and Aaron in the noise and confines of my flat. The salty wind helps me tune in to their voices. I close my...

The fabulous Karen S Elliott asked me to write about Scotland for her blog’s International week. Come take a look at what I had to say about this beautiful country. http://karenselliott.wordpress.com/2011/11/22/my-scotland-by-heather-l-reid/ Have a great day, everyone! Heather, here. I want to introduce my guest blogger today, Vaughn Roycroft. Vaughn and I met through Writer Unboxed and have since become fast friends. His comments and insights are inspiring, wise, and always right on target.  He’s one of the most supportive people I’ve met and is always ready to help a fellow writer.  He’s also the newest reviewer for Reader Unboxed, a site for readers by readers. Congratulations, Vaughn! As he doesn’t yet have his own blog, I asked if he would consent to share some of his thoughts here at I’d Rather be Writing....

Reviving my Muse: The Beauty of Scotland

I’m sure you’ve seen those pictures of Scotland shrouded in mist. You picture wind-swept moors, weeping grey sky, and men roaming the country side in Kilts. It’s all true, except for the Kilts. Unfortunately, most men opt for pants these days with the exception of special occasions such as Weddings. I love a man in a kilt. *sigh*  But the, rugged, brooding, atmospheric landscape of Scotland has one of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen. I feel blessed to live here. With one exception. It rains. A lot. Which makes it difficult to go out...

Cursing the Blank Page

Posted by on Sep 21, 2011 in Inspiration, Writing | 9 comments

The cursor winks, mocking me as it looms above the blank page. “Come on. Do it. Write something.” Dark and evil it blinks, a beacon of my own inadequacy, each beat a challenge. “I dare you.” Fear grips me, anger too.  My mind is blank. I wipe sweat from my forehead with a sleeve. I take a sip of water, to ease the dryness in my mouth. Ideas swirl through my thoughts, I grab at them, one by one examining them in my mind, then throw each back into the ether. None of them are good enough. None of them worthy of the demands of that damned cursor. I curse. Damn...
